Getting Started Guide

To use static networking, fill in all of the fields on the left side of the screen using
a standard IP address format: four numbers, each from 0 to 255, separated by
periods. You can click in each numeric field or press the Tab key to move
between these fields.
NOTE: You should obtain an IP address for your system from
your ISP or system administrator.
To set your network information:
1.
In the IP Address field, enter the four numbers of the IP address
assigned to your system.
This address must be assigned to you by your Internet Service Provider or
a system administrator for your network. If you choose a random number,
your system may not work with other networked computers and you may
cause a problem for the person who “owns” the address that you enter.
2.
Enter the network mask for your local network.
3.
Enter the IP address of your gateway.
4.
Enter the IP address of your DNS name server in the Name server
field.
5.
If you have a secondary name server, enter its IP address in the
Backup #1 field.
You should obtain the numbers for your Netmask, Gateway, and Name
servers from your system administrator.
6.
If you use NIS in your network, enter the NIS domain in the field pro-
vided.
If you are not using NIS, you can leave the NIS domain field blank.
No matter which networking option you selected (none, DHCP, or static), you
should enter a fully-qualified hostname for your OpenLinux system in the Host-
name field.
The Hostname consists of a machine name for your computer, which you select,
followed by the domain name of your local network. Below are two examples of
complete hostnames. Yours will be different than these, however:
•
rocky.calderasystems.com
•
tripoli.cs.utah.edu
When you have entered your hostname, choose Next to continue.
